Fear of stone
2024, installation, 17 minutes.
In the deep sea,
There are moments when each one Drifts as a lonely island
But all are that solitary island
Living within the infi nite sea.
Uninhabited islands gaze upon the city lights, Their mutual yearning shining in the night sky. The pose when throwing a stone,
Is a process of picking up and throwing the stone.
That pose, unique to each individual.
There should be no correct answer,
But fearing being bound by someoneʼs eyes, their expectations.
Fear of picking up a stone, and fear of throwing it. But, this is an uninhabited island.
No one is watching, only the sea stretches out. As if the city were beyond the sea.
We all have moments when we become solitary islands, as if living in the sea.
Yet, in reality, we are all islands, and we all reside within the vast sea.
Uninhabited islands gaze at each other and at the city lights,
harboring mutual desires and aspirations.
Moreover, the pose of throwing a stone involves picking it up and then propelling it through the air. It encompasses these two actions. Each personʼs pose may vary, and there is no correct way to throw a stone. However, the fear arises from being observed and from the pressure to throw it correctly.
The act of picking up the stone is daunting,
and the fear extends to throwing it into the unknown.
Yet, here I am on this solitary island, unseen by anyone.
Beyond the sea lies a city.”
This video installation expresses inner solitude, self-exploration, relationships with others, and a longing to break free from the conflicts of self-expression through island landscapes and personal performance. The symbol of the floating island suggests that while individuals may experience solitude in their inner worlds, they simultaneously exist within relationships with others. Scenes of uninhabited islands gazing at city lights symbolize comparison, longing, and infl uence from others, expressing the tension between oneʼs inner world and external societal pressures. Additionally, the act of throwing a stone, despite no presence of any such place in the fi lm, highlights the fear and anxiety towards the freedom of action stemming from self-expression. There is a fear of being constrained by the gaze and expectations of others, as well as the risks associated with self-expression. The fi lm aims to convey the message that the fear of self-awareness and the freedom from external infl uence is not an experience unique to any one individual.
